Michael Matsuda is a nationally recognized educational leader known for his innovation, entrepreneurship, and compassion. As Superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) since 2014, he led the development of the "Career Preparedness Systems Framework," transforming educational opportunities by collaborating with higher education, and private, and non-profit sectors.Under his leadership, Mr. Matsuda has earned numerous awards, including:- One of Education Week’s “Leaders to Learn From”- The Visionary Education Leadership Award from CSU Fullerton- CABE Administrator of the Year Award- An honorary Doctorate from Chapman University- The UCI School of Education Outstanding Community Partner AwardHe was also named Administrator of the Year by the California Council for Social Studies and appointed to the NCCEP Board of Directors, focusing on ensuring underserved students have opportunities to achieve their career and life goals. He served as president of Californians Together for four years and as an elected trustee with the North Orange County Community College District for nine years.An innovator, Mr. Matsuda developed the AIME (Anaheim Innovative Mentoring Experience) program, creating mentorships with over 120 businesses and nonprofits for more than 20,000 students. He established over 300 paid summer internships and promoted innovative initiatives such as a district-wide student capstone experience, an urban farm to address food deserts, and leading cybersecurity, AI, esports, and game design pathways.Mr. Matsuda also conceptualized the AUHSD SERVATHON, an annual service event involving over 4,000 students and families. He worked with the teachers' union, ASTA, to develop California's leading community school model, which centers on student voice and agency. Additionally, he created the AI K-12 Deeper Learning Summit, bringing together national AI experts and K-12 educators from over 30 states to explore AI’s role in education.Before his current role, Mr. Matsuda spent 22 years as an educator within AUHSD, teaching at Orangeview Junior High School and Oxford Academy, and serving as a coordinator for professional learning. He holds a BA from UCLA, an MPA from USC, a teaching credential from Chapman University, and an administrative credential from CSUF.His personal connection to AUHSD is featured in the documentary "Remember Us: A Historic Chapter at Anaheim High School", which chronicles the internment of Japanese American students during WWII and highlights the story of his mother, Ruth Ikeda.Mr. Matsuda is co-author of "Educating for Purposeful Life", a blueprint for transforming school districts in AUHSD.
