Jonathan Zimmerman

Jonathan Zimmerman is the Berkowitz Professor in Education and Professor of History of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. A former Peace Corps volunteer and high school teacher, Zimmerman is the author of The Amateur Hour: A History of College Teaching in America (Johns Hopkins University Press) and eight other books. He is also a frequent contributor to the Washington Post, the New York Review of Books, and other popular newspapers and magazines. Before coming to Penn, Zimmerman taught for 20 years at New York University and gave courses at its campuses in Ghana, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi. In 2008 he received NYU's Distinguished Teaching Award, its highest recognition for classroom instruction. Zimmerman is also a founding member of Heterodox Academy, which gave him its Leadership Award in 2019.
