Learning That Sticks: Two Years of Evidence Behind Dreamscape’s Immersive Storytelling

As universities invest in integrated learning experiences, leaders must weigh the impact on student success and persistence. Dreamscape Learn (DSL) is a university-wide initiative combining cinematic virtual reality with evidence-based, student-centered classroom activities. In immersive story-driven modules, students solve novel realistic problems, deepening their engagement and learning.

DSL is powered by a broad coalition of faculty, researchers, designers, and operational teams focused on meeting the design aspirations of Arizona State University (ASU). To assess impact, ASU’s Action Lab studies the effectiveness of DSL in real-time. Research on introductory biology curriculum shows that students in DSL courses perform better and report greater engagement and satisfaction—regardless of background or preparation. A retrospective analysis across two years of data confirms these findings, and we report consistent improvements in student performance within each course and in subsequent courses. These findings demonstrate that immersive storytelling integrated with advanced pedagogy is a powerful driver of academic success. This talk explores the vital role of research-informed design in transforming education. Great courses aren't just built—they're tested into greatness.
