A Special Screening of SENTENCED

Join us in the Documentary Screening Zone for a special viewing of SENTENCED, a powerful documentary that examines America’s growing illiteracy crisis—highlighting how poverty and trauma often intersect with reading challenges, and revealing the long-lasting effects illiteracy can have into adulthood. As Frederick Douglass famously said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men,” a truth that resonates throughout this film and serves as an urgent call to address literacy needs from both a national and local perspective.

Immediately following the screening, there will be a brief panel discussion with some of the film’s creators and supporters—including leaders from Children's Literacy Project, New York City Department of Education, and Nickelodeon—who will share ways we can collectively champion literacy for all.

Later in the day, don’t miss a continued discussion with the film's co-producers Ayesha Curry and Lucy Martin, along with Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell (in conversation with Makeda Mays Green) on LightningX Wednesday Afternoon, focusing on the power of storytelling and collective impact to help ensure literacy for everyone!
