The Intentional Leader's Playbook: Governing AI in Schools Before It Governs You

AI adoption in K-12 is no longer an if or a when, it’s happening now. Generative AI tools are already in classrooms, and for many systems the real question has shifted from "should we?" to "how do we make this work at scale, sustainably, and without losing what matters most?"

That question is often more difficult than it sounds, and scaling AI in schools takes strong leadership, bringing a system into alignment around a shared vision, connecting governance to instructional priorities, and making intentional decisions about where AI supports the work while preserving the role of human judgment.

The districts making the most progress are taking a thoughtful, system-wide approach, treating implementation as change management, investing in educator readiness before expanding student access, and building the governance infrastructure needed to support responsible scale.

In this session, district leaders will offer an honest, practitioner-level account of what that work requires, sharing the decisions that created momentum, the assumptions worth challenging, and how they are leading AI adoption in ways that deepen instructional coherence.

Panelists will explore how they:

  • Built governance and oversight structures that gave educators and communities confidence without stalling meaningful innovation
  • Developed AI literacy as a leadership competency, not just a teacher skill
  • Designed student access to AI that was intentional, developmental, and grounded in learning science

Attendees will leave with a sharper framework for leading AI as a system-level initiative and a clearer sense of what separates districts that are genuinely building toward something from those that are accumulating tools.
