Senior Health Advisor to the President, ASU; Former US Assistant Surgeon General

Rear Admiral Susan J. Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.A. (ret.) provided distinguished service as a leading national government health expert in the Administrations of four U.S. Presidents. An internationally recognized medical expert, she has been a major force in bringing important public health issues including women’s health and sex differences in disease, mental illness, and global health to increased scientific and public attention. Dr. Blumenthal served as the country’s first Deputy Assistant Secretary for Women’s Health, U.S. Assistant Surgeon General, as a White House Health Advisor and a NIH Research Branch Chief. Throughout her career, she has made the application of technology to advance health a top priority establishing the first government health website and the “Missiles to Mammograms” initiative that transferred CIA, NASA, and DOD technology to improve breast cancer detection. As founder of the emerging field of public health technology, she currently serves as the Senior Health Advisor to the President of ASU providing leadership in establishing the first School of Technology for Public Health. She is also a Visiting Professor at the MIT Media Lab, a Provost Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University and a Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Blumenthal is the recipient of many awards, medals, and honorary doctorates for her pioneering health leadership and significant contributions to improving health in the U.S. and globally.
