Pedro Martinez began serving as the CEO of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in the fall of 2021. With over 30 years of experience in private, nonprofit, and public education sectors, he has led CPS to dramatic gains in student achievement and staff morale. Under his leadership, students have achieved record-high graduation rates, scholarships, and college credits earned in high school. CPS is also developing nationally recognized partnerships with philanthropic organizations, higher education institutions, trade unions, and businesses to create transformational opportunities for students. Born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Mr. Martinez immigrated to Chicago at age 5. The oldest of 12 children, he graduated from Benito Juarez High School in Pilsen as the first in his family to earn a high school and college degree, dedicating his life to education.A nationally recognized superintendent, he served as CPS Chief Financial Officer from 2003–2009 and led San Antonio ISD to become Texas' fastest-improving large district. A data-driven leader with expertise in academic reform, Mr. Martinez believes that high expectations and the right supports enable students to succeed in college, career, and life. He holds an MBA from DePaul University and a Bachelor’s in Accounting from the University of Illinois, with Superintendent certifications in Illinois and Texas.
