John serves as a strategic advisor to entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, and philanthropists, including the Walton Family Foundation, A-Street Ventures, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). His portfolio involves a broad range of issues including education, workforce development, youth mental health, climate tech, and Covid response and recovery. John served as a domestic policy advisor in the White House where he coordinated the Administration’s efforts during the credit crisis to stabilize $200 billion in student loans. He also served as a negotiator for the Trade Adjustment Assistance reauthorization. As Deputy Policy Director to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, John contributed to the first National Pandemic Strategy and the President’s package of high-skilled immigration reforms. He also served Director of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. John co-founded the strategic advisory firm Whiteboard Advisors, was as a senior program officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and served as the VP of Policy for Governor Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education. John is a fellow and moderator in the Aspen Global Leadership Network and an alumnus of the American Council on Germany Young Leaders Program. He serves on boards for the Aspen Institute’s Future of Work, Pope Francis’ Scholas Initiative, the Bush Institute, CDT, and Zearn Math.
