NYC Public Schools: HBCU Early College Prep

Dr. Asya Johnson, an accomplished educator with 19 years of experience, is the creator and founding principal of HBCU Early College Prep, the first school of its kind in a major metropolitan city. Previously, she served as principal of Longwood Preparatory Academy in the South Bronx, where she transformed the school from persistently struggling to Good Standing by implementing culturally responsive practices. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Johnson has addressed systemic challenges by fostering community partnerships, establishing resources like campus food pantries and student recording studios, and shaping diversity policies as a member of New York City’s Diversity Advisory Group. Recognized for her dedication to equity and excellence, she has received numerous honors, including the Bank Street College Alumni Recognition Award, and continues to mentor future leaders while advancing educational opportunities for underserved communities.
