Dr. Curtis L. Lewis is the Founder and CEO of the Black Male Educators Alliance (BMEA), an organization advancing educational equity and liberatory practices for Black, Brown, and economically disadvantaged communities. A Chicago native who now calls Detroit home, Dr. Lewis draws inspiration from his upbringing and the memory of his late brother, dedicating his 25+ year career to transforming education. Under Dr. Lewis’s leadership, BMEA has grown into a national force, empowering educators to create culturally responsive and liberatory school environments. Through programs like the Youth Leadership Development Program, wellness fellowships, and school partnerships, BMEA has impacted over 15,000 students and educators in Detroit, Chicago, New York, and beyond. As an Assistant Professor and Director of the MATC program at Michigan State University, Dr. Lewis mentors future educators and leaders from diverse backgrounds. His work strengthens pathways for individuals to enter teaching or pursue civically engaged careers, while also addressing systemic inequities in education. Through his role at MSU and BMEA’s programs, he ensures that students and educators are equipped to uplift and transform their communities. Dr. Lewis also serves on various advisory boards and committees, shaping education policy and systemic change. Above all, he is a devoted father, dedicated to uplifting future generations and ensuring education remains a tool for liberation and empowerment.
