EdTech has experienced an inflection point over the last two years in the wake of Covid. Now, the industry is at a critical and exciting time to leverage this momentum to provide opportunity and education for ALL. Education is truly on the "edge". We compiled a list of the 150 most transformational education technology companies that are leading the way in achieving this mission. These 150 companies are leading the growth in EdTech, while finding innovative and scalable ways to serve learners around the world. As these companies experienced unprecedented demand throughout 2020 and 2021, global venture capital investments in education technology kept pace, increasing 29% to $21B in 2021. In 2021, the number of Edtech unicorns grew to 51. These companies are achieving scale by expanding their lifetime value and international reach, serving global learners from PreK to Gray. Today's transformational companies in global learning are ensuring that all people have equal access to the future.
We are announcing the 2022 edition of
GSV Edtech 150 — a list that represents the most transformative private companies in education. With the rapid scaling of the industry, an unprecedented number of companies were considered, making it the most competitive yet to narrow the list to only 150 names. We evaluated over 3,000 VC and PE-backed private companies across several factors —
revenue scale,
revenue growth,
user reach,
geographic diversification, and
margins profile, to arrive at the top 150 companies. As the world continues to adjust to a new normal, these platforms are providing solutions to help improve access to quality education regardless of the learning environment. We estimate that the 150 companies reach ~3 billion people, or close to half of the global population, and generate approximately $20 billion in revenue.
