Richard Ekman is President Emeritus of the Council of Independent Colleges. During his 21 years as president he established the CIC Online Course Sharing Consortium, several workshops at the headquarters of major technology companies for college presidents, and a program for sharing of advanced courses in the humanities that no small college alone would be likely to offer regularly. Earlier he served as the Secretary of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where he designed and led the initiative on Technology and Scholarly Communication. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Divisions of Education Programs and Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities. He currently serves on governing or advisory boards for Emeriti Health Solutions, SAGE Scholars, Project Pericles, Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and is Of Counsel to Academic Search and Special Advisor to The Registry for College and University Presidents. Previous board service includes Johns Hopkins University Press, Louisiana State University Press, Harvard University Board of Overseers Committee to Visit the University Library, American Academic Leadership Institute, and American Council on Education.
