Randy Fielding is an architect and founding partner at Fielding International, an interdisciplinary architecture and education firm that designs schools where learners thrive. As a champion for the firm’s mission, Randy serves as a thought leader, learning collaborator, and design mentor.
With clients, Randy’s style is to invite, include and inspire—to reach out and welcome diverse students, teachers, administrators, specialists, parents, and community members. Randy views himself as an on-site co-leader of learning, and not as an outside expert who drops in to direct and inspect. He also moves easily back and forth from uplifting, unifying ideas to practical, down-to-earth realities.
Randy is known for developing a series of design patterns for creative learning environments, and making them available as an open source resource to schools around the world. Each pattern describes a problem which occurs over and over again in our environment, and then describes the core of the solution to that problem, in such a way that you can use this solution a million times over, without ever doing it the same way twice.
40 design patterns for creative learning environments were first made available in The Language of School Design, which Randy co-authored in 2005. 66 new and updated design patterns will be available at www.fieldingintl.com in the 4th quarter of 2021. Each pattern is available to all at no charge through a creative commons copyright.
Randy’s work, which extends from early childhood to higher education and across 50 countries, has earned eighteen international design awards, including the top two awards from the Association for Learning Environments: Planner of the Year and the MacConnell Award.
