Akimi Gibson is Vice President and Education Publisher at Sesame Workshop, the media and education nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street. She leads the formal education initiatives, partnerships, and business. The group is designed to work with industry-leading partners across several fields on behalf of children, families, and educators from PreK through Grade 2. Prior to joining Sesame Workshop, Gibson was Deputy Executive Director at NAEYC where she oversaw the Professional Development, Publications, Marketing & Communication, and Sales departments. In this role, she launched a new division focused on digital and mobile content that helped connect all user-facing experiences across divisions and the organization’s affiliates. Gibson also held several senior leadership positions at Scholastic, Inc. During her tenure with Scholastic, she served as the group publisher, overseeing the development of educational products for K-12 schools, libraries, and early childhood programs. Earlier roles included senior positions at educational technology start-ups and media companies looking to venture into the school market, such as the Walt Disney Company. Gibson is also a children's book author, a former program administrator and literacy coach. As a former classroom teacher, she has worked with infants and toddlers, to special needs second grade, to literacy tutoring for students in K-6th grade. e
